Procrastination is the act of postponing, delaying or putting off something, especially habitually or intentionally.

If you’re expecting me to tell you that a little procrastination is good for you, I’m really not gonna do that. It’s not chocolatte. It is the little procrastinations that build up the habit.

Procrastination tends to put a halt to achievements and success. Sometimes it delays them by hours or days, while other times, by months and even, years.

I have a kinda bad history with procrastination myself. There is always a time at a point in my life, usually once or twice, where I re-evaluate myself. I find out thathas it been I wasn’t lazying around or didn’t procrastinae a lot’ I’d have achieved a lot of feats. So I scold myself, and the next day or two days after, I revert back to my previous self. So you can say I’m a sort of master when it comes to procrastination.

Sometimes I’m like, “of course I have plans for the future, which I will make when the time comes.”

However, I got to get over my procrastination. So as a self-taught expert on overcoming procrastination, I am gonna teach you how a chronic procrastinator such as myself got over my procrastination in the following steps:

1. Acceptance:

The first step of overcoming procrastination is acceptance. You have to accept the fact that you’re a procrastinator. The more you keep denying you’re a procrastinator, the farther you get away from overcoming it. Learn how to accept it. To be honest, there is no shame in being a procrastinator. But if you keep denying it, you’ll be lying to yourself and eventually lose the path to coming back from procrastination; you will reach a point of no return.

2. Reasons why you procrastinate:

Ask yourself why you procrastinate. Some people procrastinate because they’re lazy, some because they’re pessimistic, while for others, it is in their personality to procrastinate. Figure out why you procrastinate so as to find ways to overcome it.

3. Don’t make excuses:

Stop making excuses for why you keep putting off tasks and delaying them. The more you keep making excuses, the more you keep giving yourself false reasons to delay tasks. Don’t make excuses, instead, learn to take responsibilities and work on yourself. Try to convince yourself that the excuses are not good enough to make you postpone tasks.

4. Start easy and anywhere:

It really doesn’t matter where you start this journey from to some extent. Whether you start from doing your homework early, working out, keeping your room tidy, studying or working on your projects- just start somewhere. If you don’t start from anywhere you can, you will keep procrastinating on the things that matter.

5. Set value and reward for your goals:

Give your goals value. When you attribute values to them, you’re more likely to take them serious and take action.

Rewards will drive you to accomplish more by positive reinforcement.

6. Block out distractions:

Don’t let things distract you from doing what you’re supposed to do. Take control

Some people natural have short attention-span and get easily distracted. I’m one of these type of people, but I have found ways to block out distractions.

Start by giving each task an alotted time. For example; homework- 45 mins, studying-120mins. Stick to time even if it gets boring; just keep to the schedule.

Next, you try to make each task interesting. Find ways to make each task interesting.

7.Embrace imperfection:

No one is perfect. Learn to accept that and go easy on yourself. Even some of the people that are successful and seem to have everything figured out aren’t perfect. They simly learned how to embrace their imperfections and prevented their imperfections from holding them back. Just do you best and leave the rest.

8. Take action:

Do something; something that makes a difference, something the ‘you’ of the past would have been reluctant to do. It is important to focus on starting rather than finishing.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

Start something today.

9.Break down big projects to simple tasks:

When a task seems huge, most people will be reluctant to start immediately or early. They delay it for some time. It is easier when you break down those projects into smaller tasks and work on each little task daily. That way. you’ll get more work done and at the end of the day, you will get it done in time, faster than when you concentrate on taking a project all at once.

10. Don’t pressurize yourself:

Don’t put so much pressure on yourself. You will most likely end up stressed out and tired to even accomplish anything. Then you get to a phase where you just keep putting off tasks you are supposed to carry out.

Go easy on yourself- start with babysteps and remain calm.

11. Have fun:

Don’t forget to have fun.

“All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”

Enjoy yourself. Make the tasks interesting. As people say these days:

“Work hard-yes. Play hard-yes or work hard, lay hard”
